Sewing Machine in Davenport Desk
A superb davenport desk made in polished walnut with false side drawers, original glass knobs (3 missing)opens up to reveal a fine Wheeler & Wilson type sewing machine with a treadle mechanism enclosed below. The sewing machine has the name "Flater & Co" stamped on the bedplate along with the number 4694. The box on the left of the machine contains a full range of accessories and an original screwdriver. The foot treadle has the original leather straps for the feet. The drawers inside the desk are functional with ivory (or bone) knobs.
The leather top is original but only about three quarters complete. There should be a small brass gallery around the flat part of the top which slides out for when the sewing machine is in use, (which probably explains why it is missing. Replacement galleries are not difficult to get for davenports).
The quality of the desk as furniture is outstanding. The top of the desk is detachable - if required.
This is the finest sewing machine I have ever offered for sale and must have been exceptionally expensive new. I personally have never seen another of this quality in any collection.
