Uranium Bohemian Glass Decanter
-
Superb uranium glass decanter with stopper made in Bohemia about 1860. Uranium glass was popular in the nineteenth century but now good examples are uncommon. It was first used as a colourant in glass in 1789 by Martin Klaproth in Germany and fifty years later by the glass makers of Bohemia, seeking new colours in the highly competitive glass market. The most striking thing about uranium glass is that it is fluorescent under ultra violet light. The photos used here were taken using only an ultra violet light source.
